Ethical challenges of gene transfer and regenerative medicine

 Who are we?

The Jagiellonian University part of CARTHAGO is the Research Ethics in Medicine Study Group (REMEDY). We work on ethics and policy of biomedical research. Our team has expertise in philosophy, biology, pharmacy, biomedical engineering, mathematics and biostatistics. Our mission is to provide independent analyses to make research with human beings in biomedicine safer and more efficient. We adapt advanced methods of Evidence Based Medicine and meta-research to answer questions in bioethics.

The Jagiellonian University (JU) is one of the oldest higher education institutions in Europe with approximately 40 000 students. The large-scale projects run by the JU include the Jagiellonian Centre for Experimental Therapeutics, Małopolska Centre for Biotechnology, and OMICRON. In 2018 the JU was listed among Reuter’s Top 100 Europe’s Most Innovative Universities.

Who are we looking for?

We are seeking a candidate with a biomedical, STEM or social science background with an interest in research ethics and who has completed master studies. Expertise in systematic reviews, health-technology assessment, social science research and bioethics is highly desirable.

Description of Duties

The Jagiellonian University part of CARTHAGO aims to deliver an evidence-based ethics policy, advisory and training for all parties of the project. The successful PhD candidate will be involved in various types of bioethical research and normative analysis. This includes co-design and execution of every aspect of meta-research, meta-analysis and systematic reviews: searches, data extraction, data stewardship, analysis and synthesis.  The PhD candidate will be also involved into a teaching/training assistance.

Terms of employment

 The successful candidate will be offered a full-time research position at the Jagiellonian University Medical College, initially for one year, starting February-March 2021. Upon successful evaluation of the first year, the contract will be extended for two more years. The monthly salary: Living allowance: 2,468.85 EUR (reduced by ~37% tax and public health benefit plan)/month; mobility allowance: 600 EUR (reduced by ~17% tax)/month; family allowance: 500 EUR (reduced by ~17% tax)/month.
