Recruitment information

CARTHAGO offers 15 PhD positions with different partners in Sweden, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Denmark, UK, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, and Poland, who will join local graduate schools in addition to shared training program for the network, which includes training on regenerative medicine as well as transferable skills.

There will be two calls to hire for open positions; the first call opens in fall of 2020, with starting dates in fall 2020 and winter 2020/2021. The second call opens winter 2021, with starting dates in spring and summer of 2021.

The consortium will hire 15 excellent, talented, enthusiastic, highly motivated and goal-oriented Early Stage Researchers (ESRs). The ideal candidate is interested in regenerative medicine and gene therapy, highly motivated to perform research in a multidisciplinary international working environment, and committed to a PhD track.

Requirements for all candidates

In accordance with the very strict EC Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions ITN eligibility criteria:

  • Candidates did not reside or carry out their main activity (e.g. work, studies) in the host country (=country where the ESR will be appointed) for more than 12 months during the 3 years immediately prior to the start of their Carthago appointment (time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention, compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account).
  • Candidates are in the first 4 years of their research careers at the start of their Carthago appointment (full-time equivalent research experience, measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree entitling him or her to embark on a doctorate) and have not been awarded a doctoral degree

In addition we seek:

  • Excellent proficiency of the English language (both oral and written),
  • The ability to work in a multidisciplinary team. Excellent communication skills and cooperation skills are required,
  • An inquisitive mind-set, accuracy and self-reliance are very important. You are required to be flexible and mobile, including willingness to travel to other partners for 1-4 month secondments,
  • High interest in receiving training from supervisors from different institutes, disciplines and sectors,
  • High motivation to contribute to the dissemination of results and outreach to both specialists and the public at large,
  • Enthusiasm to visit Consortium Partners for secondments (internships). ESRs will benefit from a dedicated training program in the various fields of expertise of the consortium partners.

 

Secondments

In CARTHAGO, each recruited researcher will be seconded to two or more partner organisations for a duration of several weeks/months. During the secondments, the researchers will keep their contract with their host organisation, while the travel and subsistence expenses are paid for. During their secondment, researchers receive supervision and training at the premises of the receiving organisation. Secondments are differentiated from short visits, i.e. of a few days and are mandatory. If you apply for one of the positions (max. 2) you accept that you will be seconded to other organisations during your contract.

Recruitment procedure

  1. Candidates can only apply for a position using the  ‘apply now’ button on the relevant vacancy on the CARTHAGO website (see the updates and Q&A page of this Carthago site). Applications received via other channels are not taken into account. The application should be complete, including one pdf with an evidence-based CV, and written motivation for the selected position.
  2. Candidates can apply to max two positions.
  3. The principal investigators (PIs) and the Selection Committee will per position (SC) review all received applications and preselect around 5 candidates for each project based on evaluation criteria set on this page and the pages of the relevant positions.
  4. The long listed candidates are invited for a first interview round and subsequently short listed candidates are invited in a second round through online video conferences with the PIs and the Selection Committee respectively. The selection committee will be instructed on gender-bias, and given sufficient time to go through the applications to further reduce the chance of bias. Gender equality will be ensured by gender balance in the SB and the same opportunity for female and male scientists to progress their career by offering them similar strategic positions.
  5. The top ranked short-list candidates for each position are discussed within the SC, taking into account candidates per position and the overall distribution of candidates. The final short list consists of the most suitable candidates for each available position as well as 1-2 back up candidates (if available).
  6. The final candidate(s) are invited to be appointed.

Ineligible or otherwise rejected candidates are informed via an electronic letter as soon as possible, which may occur at different stages in the recruitment procedure.

The consortium commits itself to adhere to the principles of the ‘Code of Conduct for the recruitment of researchers (2005) as stipulated by the European Union and the NVU Recruitment Code.

Researchers will be selected following an open, transparent, merit-based, impartial and equitable selection procedure. CARTHAGO pays special attention to Gender Equality in research and to applications of scientists with refugee status (cf. the science4refugees program).
